Platform Scales: How to Choose One That Keeps Up With Your Business
If you've ever watched someone guess the weight of a pallet, you already know why platform scales matter. A few kilos out here, a rounded number there, and suddenly your stock levels, invoices and shipping costs don't add up.If you've ever watched someone guess the weight of a pallet, you already know why platform scales matter. A few kilos out here, a rounded number there, and suddenly your stock levels, invoices and shipping costs don't add up.

The good news is that choosing the right platform scales isn't complicated once you know what to look for. At Scales and Balances, we help UK businesses weigh everything from crates to full pallets, so here's the advice we'd give you if you rang our sales team.
What are platform scales?
Platform scales have a large, flat weighing surface that sits on load cells, plus an indicator that shows the weight. Put the load on, read the number, and you're done.
They're made for items that won't fit on a bench scale, like pallets, drums, crates and containers. Our range also includes bench scales, industrial floor scales and pallet scales, so you can match the scale to the job instead of making do.
Where platform scales earn their keep
You'll find platform scales in more places than you might expect. Warehouses use them to check inbound and outbound goods. Factories use them to weigh raw materials and finished batches. Farms weigh feed and fertiliser, and logistics teams use them to avoid carrier surcharges on parcels and pallets.
Anywhere weight affects cost, safety or quality, a good scale pays for itself quickly. Fewer disputes, fewer mistakes and better records are usually the first things customers notice.
Four things to check before you buy platform scales
1. Capacity and readability. Capacity is the heaviest load the scale can take. Readability is the smallest change in weight it can show. Choose a capacity comfortably above your heaviest load, but not so high that you lose accuracy on lighter ones.
2. Platform size. Measure your biggest pallet or container first. It sounds obvious, but it's the mistake we hear about most.
3. Trade approval. If you sell or charge by weight, you'll need trade approved scales. If you only weigh for internal checks, you may not, but it's worth asking us before you decide.
4. The environment. Dust, damp, forklift traffic and daily hose-downs all affect which scale will last. Some sites even need ATEX scales for hazardous areas.
Washdown and Waterproof Scales
This deserves its own section, because it's where the wrong choice gets expensive.
Washdown and waterproof scales are built to survive water, moisture and regular cleaning. They're typically made from stainless steel, with sealed load cells and electronics protected against water and dust. That protection is shown by an IP rating, and the higher the number, the better the scale resists water and dust.
Why does this matter? A standard scale that gets hosed down can let water into the load cell and display. Over time you'll see corrosion, drifting readings and, eventually, a scale that stops working. In food production, dairy, fish processing, pharmaceuticals and chemical plants, there's also a hygiene issue. Stainless steel is easy to clean and doesn't trap residue, which helps you stay on top of cleaning schedules and audits.

When you're choosing washdown and waterproof scales, check the IP rating, ask which cleaning chemicals the scale can handle, and make sure the indicator is protected as well as the platform. Our waterproof range includes stainless steel pallet scales and models such as the Ohaus Defender 5000, so there's an option for most budgets and capacities.
Accuracy doesn't end at checkout
Even the best platform scales drift over time. Knocks, temperature changes and heavy daily use all take a toll, which is why regular calibration matters. We offer calibration and certification, including a certificate traceable to national standards on request. If you'd rather check your scales in-house between visits, we also supply calibration weights.
We provide service and repairs at competitive prices, too. Every scale and balance we sell comes with a 12-month return-to-base warranty, and if something isn't right, you can call a real person who knows the product.
